Biographical sketch of Mahesh Dattani: 

Actor, director, play write, dancer and screenplay writer MaheshDattani was born in Bangalore on Aug. 7, 1958. Educated at Baldwin's high school and St. Joseph's college of Art and Science, Dattani is a graduate in history, economics and political science with post graduate in marketing and advertising management. 

              He has worked as a copywriter in an advertising firm and subsequently with his father in business. His theatre group, playpen was formed in 1984 and he has directed several plays for them, ranging from Classical Greek to contemporary works. In 1998, Dattani won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his book of plays Final Solution and other Plays, thus becoming he first English language play write to win award.

Introducing Final Solution:

In 1998, Mahesh Dattani became the first Indian playwright in English to be honored with the coveted Sahitya Akademi Award for his collection of plays titled Final Solution and Others Plays. The success of Indian playwrights like Dattani and Manjula Padmanabhan is significant because unlike the Indian novel and Indian poetry in English, Indian drama in English does not have a long and enabling tradition. In spite of the rich and varied tradition of Sanskrit drama, the Parsi theatre and drama in other Indian languages, there is very little Indian drama in English. The play of Dattani's predecessor such as and Pratap Sharma have had a very limited appeal and were more often read than performed on stage. In contrast, Mahesh Dattani's play have been staged widely to popular and critical acclaim on Indian and abroad.
