Summary of Profession For Women By Virginia Woolf

Summary: Virginia Adeline Woolf (1882-1941) was an English novelist and essayist, regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century. She was one of the leaders in the literary movement of modernism. The speech of Professions for Women was given in 1931 to the Women’s Service League by Virginia Woolf. It was also included in Death of a Moth and Other Essays in 1942. Throughout the speech, Virginia Woolf brings forward a problem that is still relevant today: gender inequality. Woolf’s main point in this essay was to bring awareness to the phantoms (illusions) and obstacles women face in their jobs. Woolf argues that women must overcome special obstacles to become successful in their careers. She describes two hazards she thinks all women who aspire to professional life must overcome: their tendency to sacrifice their own interests to those of others and their reluctance to challenge conservative male attitudes. A Question of Identity Woolf and her fresh opinions about the role of women in society are quite well known. Regarded as an ardent advocate for females’ rights, it is no surprise to find these same undertones in her essay “Professions for Women”. Woolf tackles Coventry Patmore’s ideas behind his poem “The Angel in the House” and addresses a dichotomy between herself and this Angel in the House. Though we know her so well, let us not take this essay too lightly. Woolf opens up her essay by faithfully telling her readers that “it is true I am a woman” (2152). However, as she continues her essay into a discussion of Patmore’s poem, her language shifts, and she creates this separation between the woman in Patmore’s poem and herself. What is meant by 'Aura'? According to Walter Benjamin, aura is a cult quality of art which refers to the uniqueness of art. In the past, art has an aura in it owing to its limited audience and the absence of identical copies. The statue of David, Venus and Mona Lisa had an aura in them. The statues of various gods were confined to the churches and there was no replication of the original. Although the sculptures in the past were appreciated by only priests or few people but they had an aura and spirituality in them. The aura has been lost now because the original art is available everywhere in the form of its authentic identical copies. What is exhibition value?
